artist's statement : on symbolism
(originally written for and published in the One Of Us webgallery)
Symbolism is the artist's tool for expressing his 'message', and every artist and street corner messiah has a 'message'... but this is not a message of salvation, this is a message of realization... that the drama exists as part of our cultural condition:
'The fulfillment of Roles vs. the expression of Free Will.'
Or: 'the nature of Man vs. the man of Nature.'
Or: 'the self (Actual) vs. the Self (fantasied)'
The medium is the artist's vehicle; this medium's crystal ball is a lens and an iris upon a Lens and an Iris and a functioning Mythology that outlines in detail the scripts of the Roles aforementioned. The subject is Beauty, the indefinable quality that strikes a harmony deep within the soul chords of our DNA strings. Human desire is the mirror to the human condition... or a window to the collective experience where the Roles have played out to every possible ending before.
It is up to us to adapt our weaknesses to become strengths; we seek self-awareness (meaning) in the faces of others. We get angry when the universe does not act according to our will (rather, when we are not acting in accordance to the universal will, which is truly a Free Will), because these Roles fill us with desires, promises of fulfillment... yet when we acknowledge the Role, it loses power over us, we become the medium, as we refine the process.
We stand naked, in Truth, and fascinated by the quality of the Light.
artist's statement : on inspiration
(reflection for photo-noir)
"Nothing inspires the art of man more than woman," I have been told. This may be true. Certainly nothing inspires a soul more than passion. It has also been said that woman inspires man to war, which leads one to perceive her as a precious resource. The troubadours would agree that she is such, when one's passion lies with a woman... That true love is worth a lifetime quest, and she becomes the greatest inspiration.
Woman makes man seem base and ugly, even when man is crafted of divine poetry, art, and musculature. She is the font of serotonin, the transcendent moon, the earth(ly) goddess. Nature's most successful reproductive strategy requires man to desire her in ways that destroy his ability to reason, as she is the keeper of this happiness. She is his destiny, the future of his dna.
Her mind is rarely so pointlessly crowded. She is not troubled by the things that plague men... their boorish mockeries of war, loutish boastfulness, and lecherous peeks (man : brain happy chemical driven). Her vision sees into a place where man squints and blinks, and she helps him train his eyes to see the beauty before him... his Muse.
artist's bio 1 :
(originally written for and published in the Kyoto Fine Art Nudes webgallery)
A recent article in Boston's Weekly Dig cautions - "don't simply label [addam] as an 'erotic' or even 'fetish' photographer. His talent is beyond the merely naked. Instead, he captures sensual, mysterious forms cut away from velvety blackness, exquisite spirits whose subtle curves are drawn to the light from a dark imagination: bold, slightly vulnerable, and all awesomely enchanting."
For addam, the art is not just in taking the photographs, but is in creating the images... works that are sensual, evocative, and symbolic. Photography is used as an empathic medium through which the creative process reveals its intuitive enigmas.
Selections of addam's work were recently published as section covers in the Boston Phoenix, a popular weekly arts and entertainment newspaper. With exhibitions at major New England fetish culture events such as the "Fetish Fair Fleamarket" and the "B&D Ball" as well as several nightclubs, events, and boutiques, his work is often seen in northeast subcultural circles.

artist's bio 2:
(originally written for and published in part in the Michelle 7 webgallery)
Truly art cannot be a commercial profession. Commercial interest plagues the mind and compromises the creative spirit. The creative process is strictly intuitive... it can be procrastinated, but not rushed.
addam is a non-commercial photographic artist who is a professional disc jockey that plays to the Boston gothic nightclub scene. To support himself and his art, addam works a few moving jobs and makes a little chainmaille jewellry.
addam does not usually refer to himself in the third person, however: 'if anything, i'm likely to pluralize Myself,' we said thoughtfully. "The only thing that brings me solace in a world where tyrants and corporations fight over this dying planet's last remaining resources and sell SUVs to people who'd claw each other's eyes out for a good parking space at church is the celebration of life."
One part of that celebration is the contemplation of beauty, and it's artistic expression. Another is just being alive.
